Novena to St. Anthony of Padua
St. Anthony of Padua, Franciscan preacher and Doctor of the Church, was so filled with the Word of God that crowds filled the fields to hear him. Christians turn to him to find what is lost: keys and rings, but also faith, peace, and people who have wandered far.
Begins June 4, ending the eve of St. Anthony.
Pray one day's prayer each day, nine days in a row. The next day opens tomorrow, and days you've prayed stay open to reread.
Day 1 of 9 · Lover of the Word
St. Anthony, the Scriptures lived in you. You knew them so deeply that Pope Gregory called you the Ark of the Testament, and the word of Christ was the bread you fed to the crowds.
Pray for me, that the Word of God may live in me too. I own more Bibles than I read. Ask the Lord to give me a hunger for his Scriptures — to open them daily, ponder them slowly, and let them judge and console my heart until his word becomes my native tongue.
St. Anthony, lover of the Word, pray that it dwell in me richly.
Amen.
Conclude with an Our Father, a Hail Mary, and a Glory Be.
