Come, Holy Spirit
Veni, Sancte Spiritus
The opening lines are the alleluia verse of the Mass of Pentecost, and the versicle quotes Psalm 104 on the Spirit who renews the earth. The collect that follows is the Church’s own prayer for the feast. It asks for wisdom and consolation, the two gifts a person most needs before opening a book or a meeting, which is why it has become the usual prayer before study.
Pentecost liturgy; Psalm 104:30
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful
and kindle in them the fire of your love.
℣.Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created.
℟.And you shall renew the face of the earth.
Let us pray.
O God, who taught the hearts of the faithful
by the light of the Holy Spirit,
grant that in the same Spirit we may be truly wise
and ever rejoice in his consolation.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
