Out of the Depths
De Profundis
Psalm 130 is one of the seven penitential psalms, a cry from the bottom of a pit by someone who knows he cannot climb out alone. Catholics have prayed it for the dead for centuries, lending their voice to souls who are waiting for the morning. The wording here follows the old Douay Bible.
Psalm 130 (129), Douay-Rheims
Out of the depths I have cried to you, O Lord;
Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive
to the voice of my supplication.
If you, O Lord, will mark iniquities,
Lord, who shall stand?
But with you there is merciful forgiveness,
and by reason of your law I have waited for you, O Lord.
My soul has relied on his word;
my soul has hoped in the Lord.
From the morning watch even until night,
let Israel hope in the Lord.
For with the Lord there is mercy,
and with him plentiful redemption.
And he shall redeem Israel
from all its iniquities.
℣.Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.
℟.And let perpetual light shine upon them.
℣.May they rest in peace.
℟.Amen.
