Guardian Angel Prayer
Angele Dei
The Latin “Angele Dei” goes back to the 11th century, and the English rhyme is a 19th-century rendering that made it easy for children to learn. It asks the angel for four things, to light, guard, rule and guide, covering both what we see and what we do. The Church teaches that every person has such an angel from birth, and the feast of the Guardian Angels falls on 2 October.
Traditional, 11th century (“Angele Dei”)
Angel of God, my guardian dear,
to whom God’s love commits me here,
ever this day be at my side,
to light and guard, to rule and guide.
Amen.
