My Queen, My Mother
O Domina mea
The Jesuit Nicola Zucchi wrote this in Rome in the 1600s, and it spread across the Catholic world through school sodalities. It hands Mary the day piece by piece, eyes and ears and mouth and heart, and then asks her to look after what is now hers. In Spanish and Portuguese it is one of the first prayers children learn after the Hail Mary.
Fr. Nicola Zucchi, S.J., 17th century
My Queen, my Mother,
I give myself entirely to you;
and to show my devotion to you,
I consecrate to you this day
my eyes, my ears, my mouth, my heart,
my whole being without reserve.
Wherefore, good Mother, as I am your own,
keep me and guard me
as your property and possession.
Amen.
