Prayer for Generosity
This prayer travels under the name of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the soldier who founded the Jesuits, though its first printed copies are from around 1900. It asks for one thing, a generous heart, and spells out what that costs: giving, fighting, working, without keeping score. Jesuit schools and scout troops around the world have made it their own.
Attributed to St. Ignatius of Loyola
Lord, teach me to be generous.
Teach me to serve you as you deserve:
to give and not to count the cost,
to fight and not to heed the wounds,
to toil and not to seek for rest,
to labor and not to ask for reward,
save that of knowing that I do your will.
Amen.
