Regina Caeli
A 12th-century antiphon that tells Mary the news of Easter: the Son she bore has risen as he promised. Every line ends in alleluia, the word the Church sets aside for Lent and takes up again at the Easter Vigil. From Easter Sunday to Pentecost it takes the place of the Angelus at the same hours, and it is also sung at the end of Compline through the season.
Anonymous, 12th century
Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia.
For he whom you did merit to bear, alleluia.
Has risen, as he said, alleluia.
Pray for us to God, alleluia.
℣.Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia.
℟.For the Lord has truly risen, alleluia.
Let us pray.
O God, who through the resurrection of your Son,
our Lord Jesus Christ, gave joy to the world:
grant, we pray, that through his Mother, the Virgin Mary,
we may obtain the joys of everlasting life.
Through the same Christ our Lord.
Amen.
