Prayer to St. Michael
Sancte Michael Archangele
Pope Leo XIII wrote this in 1886 and ordered it said kneeling after every Low Mass, a practice that lasted until 1964. It names St. Michael as the leader of the angels in the war against Satan described in Revelation 12 and asks his protection here and now. Pope Francis asked Catholics to take it up again in 2018, and many parishes now say it after Mass once more.
Pope Leo XIII, 1886; Revelation 12:7-9
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God, cast into hell Satan
and all the evil spirits
who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.
