Suscipe
Suscipe, Domine
St. Ignatius placed this at the end of the Spiritual Exercises, published in 1548, as the response to everything the retreatant has seen of God’s love. It hands over the four things a person thinks of as most their own: liberty, memory, understanding and will. Jesuits and many others say it after Communion, since that is the moment the exchange it describes is most real.
St. Ignatius of Loyola, Spiritual Exercises (1548)
Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty,
my memory, my understanding, and my entire will,
all that I have and possess.
You have given all to me;
to you, Lord, I return it.
All is yours; dispose of it wholly according to your will.
Give me only your love and your grace,
and I am rich enough and ask for nothing more.
Amen.
